They include basilicas, with the influence of Venetian architecture, usually adorned with iconography in the traditional Ionian (late-Cretan) devotional style and with beautifully sculpted wooden iconostases, some in gold leaf.

The most famous all over the world is the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni.

Lefkada Christian Tour 4 Hours; Most churches were built between the 17th and 18th centuries, their configuration was finally determined from about 1836. The iconography was by notable devotional painters, of which only a few of the best known are Doxaras, Patsaras, Roussos, Ventouras, Gazis, also from Kefallonia: Rifios, Karantinos, Miniatis, and more. Metropolitan bishops and prominent parishioners were buried inside the churches and some tombstones, usually of marble, are still legible today. Other parishioners were buried in the churchyard until the time the town’s Municipal Cemetery was built.

Discovering the city of Lefkada by visiting the church of Agios Minas, the church of the Presentation of Mary (1720 AD) with its traditional Ionian bell tower, the church of the Pantocrator, the church of Agioi Anargiroi, the church of Panagia ton Xenon (Foreigners) built in 1718, the Cathedral (I.N. Evagelistrias) initially built in 1689 but took its final form in 1886, the church of Agios Nikolaos built in 1687, the church of Agios Demetrios took the form it has today in 1825, and the Church of Agios Spiridon established in 1684.

Today we’ll visit the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni! The Monastery of Faneromeni is located in Frini village.

The monastery of Panagia Faneromeni. The island throws a glorious celebration of its patron saint at Holy Spirit day. The Virgin Mary is the patron and protector of the island. It celebrates with all magnificence the Monday of the Holy Spirit, with crowds of pilgrims flocking from all the surrounding areas. On this day, the minds of all the people of Lefkada, in whatever corner of the planet they are, turn reverently and pleadingly to the image of the Lady of the island.

In antiquity, at the site where the monastery now lies, stood the marble temple of goddess Artemis. According to tradition, the disciples of St. Paul preached here at 63 B.C. the teaching of Jesus Christ. In 332 B.C. two Priests settled in the monastery expanding its altar, building cells, and organizing monastery life on the island.

In the 5th century B.C. the iconographer Kallistos was commissioned to paint a picture of Mary which was revealed to him, according to tradition, in a miraculous way. The main temple was built in 1734 but during the time of Venetocracy two fires brought about its complete destruction and as a result, it was rebuilt in the 19th century. The temple shows influences from the architecture of Zakinthos, its remarkable altarpiece was carved by Prosalendis around 1886 while its picture of the Virgin Mary is a copy of the one painted in 1887 in the Holy Mountain by the monk Benjamin Kondrakis.

The view from the monastery is magnificent. You can marvel from there the olive grove, the lagoon, the town, the Ionian Sea, the mountains of Epirus and Acarnania, Preveza as well as the Ambracian Gulf in the east are also clearly visible.

The monastery also has an Ecclesiastical Museum, where hundreds of religions are hosted, and it belongs to the most interesting museums of Lefkada. You can walk around the relics, silvered and gold-plated religious objects, wooden carvings, hundreds of years old paintings. The exhibition includes sacred objects not only from Faneromeni but from other smaller monasteries of Lefkada island.

Persons with Disabilities

  • Due to uneven surfaces, certain sites are not recommended for persons with walking disabilities or using a wheelchair. Most of Lefkada Town (Chora) commercial center is either flat or has cobblestone, flagstone-paved streets and lanes with slight inclines, though there are some lanes that have steps. Note though, the center is surrounded by hills, some of which are steep, but you could easily avoid those and still have plenty to see on flatter terrain. Alternatively, you could visit a beach like Platis Gialos or Ornos with a good selection of hotels & restaurants alongside or close to the beaches which are flat!
  • In all cases, we recommend comfortable flat-soled walking shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
